This week's prompt is "Why?"
All it takes is for my little sis to call me and ask, "Did you see that Tony Pizza from the old neighborhood died?" And I'm done. I head to the obit section of the home town paper - online - and then to the funeral home's online guest book and then back to my sis. It's ridiculous. OR... I'll see a headline like "Man From Monsterville, USA Dies While shoveling Snow" and I'll immediately go to the obituaries
Why?
Why are we obsessed with the obituaries? And I know it's not just me n' my sis, I know a lot of people that read them. For some people it's a morning ritual. Coffee, smokes, the obituaries. It's such a morbid curiosity. And speaking of morbid curiosity. Why don't they put the cause of death in the obituary? Why?? Don't you want to know what happened? Especially if it was someone you knew once upon a time? I do! Even if I don't know them! Unless of course it's a suicide or something like that, then I don't want to know but my sister will want to know!
What about you? Are you obsessed with the obits?
What are some of your "Why's" in life?
Why don't you go say hi to Gretchen over at 'Second Blooming' and join in on "The Spin Cycle??"

My mother used to be totally obsessed with the obits. Every morning during breakfast she'd check them out. I don't know what she'd have done if she'd had the internet. So far, I have not succumbed to the obit obsession, but I'm afraid that with age, it will come. Hmm...maybe I'll just head over to my hometown newspapers website...
You are linked! Welcome to the Spin Cycle!
I don't think I've ever read the obits, I guess we now live in an age where we expect our bereavement news to come to us via Twitter or Facebook. At least, it would if I didn't just Twitter solely for stalking celebrities and posting blog updates, and Facebook for playing Farmville.
@Gretchen - I wasn't obsessed until we started losing so many classmates. We're only 50, some of us younger. It's just so freaky to know the obits are now geared toward us.. Bleh.
@Kellie - That's usually how it starts for me.. Someone will post something on Facebook. How sad is that?
Never even crossed my mind reading the obits, but that whole thing of looking for your x, guilty, on facebook I just cant help it, I want to know what they are up to. I find their facebook to be boring and it makes me boost mine up. I look at mine and make it all public, I love my life and I want people to know it, I want them to know Im better off without them. Crazy right. Why? Why?
@Akashic - I know. I wasn't an obit obsessor until people I went to school with just starting passing.. So weird and then of course my sis will say something.. And everyone will know when I see my ex in the obits, I'll be throwing a big ass party!
I only go to the obits when I find out someone I know passed away. We put my dad's cause of death in it...just said, 'died after a brave and valiant battle with cancer'. My dad used to joke that he knew it'd be a good day if he went to the obits and didn't see his name there. lol
my husband is that way he always reads that part of the paper first followed by who was arrested
My friend and I made a pact. Whoever dies first will make sure the other person's obit includes how they died! We hate to read the obits and not know how they died. I want everyone to know about my battle with cancer or how I got hit by a car - LOL.
@JoJo - That's usually the only time I go but it's been happening so much around here.. Maybe it's something in the Great Lakes!
@Becca - Yeah.. We don't have a police log in our paper, I think it would take in about 3/4 of the city. ;)
@Tayla - Me n' my sister did too and we want to put totally random things in it, like I told my sister to list like 12 random ex husbands for me. She wants her pic to be in clown make up. I have every intention in making my death a fun experience for all! :D
I admit...I will read the obits from time to time just to see if I know anyone! I especially keep my eye open for people my age. It does seem a bit morbid, doesn't it?
Well, I just HAD to read this because I can relate! But it wasn't until I got older that I was curious about who had died. Because now I might KNOW them. When I was young it never occurred to me that I might know someone who had died. HELLOOOOO! We ALL die.
I am obsessed with obituaries too. Always got read them and make sure I am not on the daily list.

@Ginny - I know what you mean about looking for people you're own age. It's like a morbid count down isn't it??
@Sandy - Exactly and with so many people I went to school with dying I tend to check now more than I ever did!
@Kathy - Lol.. I've come across someone in the obits with my same name.. It's creepy..
